3 Inconvenient Truths About AI in Travel

news

AI in the travel industry isn’t living up to the hype. While there’s a role for AI to play – mostly in supplementing human expertise – the dream of AI-powered, end-to-end automation is still just that: a dream. In the meantime, travel companies will continue relying on advanced algorithms and manual interventions to keep things running smoothly.

Myth number one: It’s just an advanced algorithm, not AI magic. Many travel businesses will proudly claim their products are “powered by AI,” but the reality? It’s most likely an advanced algorithm that hasn’t significantly changed in the last decade. Sure, it crunches data efficiently and provides seemingly personalized recommendations, but that’s not AI in the sci-fi sense we’ve been promised. What we’re seeing more and more in travel is “AI-washing” – branding basic algorithms with the shiny label of AI to please investors and board members. These systems do their job well, no question about that. They can tailor itineraries based on user history and preferences, but the leap from traditional algorithms to true AI is far from realized. Rather than true artificial intelligence, it’s actually a set of automated decision trees that do mimic intelligence on the surface but lack the deep learning, analysis and adaptability of genuine AI systems.
